Activities:

The Big Island of Hawaii has so many things to offer that you cannot see and do everything in one trip unless you plan to stay a long time. Here are a few highlights.

Recommended Guidebook

The first question most people ask is, "Which guidebook should I get?" Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: the ultimate guidebook, known locally as "The Blue Book," is the best one out there. In fact, it reveals so much that some locals are concerned about the exposure to tourists of previously hidden spots.

Volcanoes

Perhaps the #1 attraction bringing visitors to the Big Island is Volcanoes National Park, located about two hours drive from Kona Ohana. The park features hiking trails, breathtaking views, and fascinating lava formations. The highlight is seeing lava flow right near where you stand! See more on volcanoes

Activities on Water
You can choose from many beaches. Fantastic snorkeling with turtles and dolphins is also less then a half hour away at Kealakekua Bay (pictured) and at "Two Steps" next to the City of Refuge State Park. You can rent Kayaks at reasonable rates -- it's easy for beginners as well.

During the months of November to April, whale-watching is also an option, as over 4000 humpback whales come back from Alaska to give birth and raise their calves.

Activities on Land

Free coffee farm tours are available at Greenwell Farms, just ten minutes down the road.

Many world-class golf courses are within an hour's drive.  Horseback riding adventures are also very popular, which will allow you to see a part of Hawaii almost mystical in its beauty.

At night it is possible to take a guided tour to the top of Mauna Kea and observe the splendors of the universe, views possible from only a few places on earth.  Look through a telescope and see the rings of Saturn!
